Michael Reis
Michael graduated from Auburn University in 1992 with a degree in Aerospace Engineering. It was in college that he developed his interest in classical music and violins in particular. After graduating from college he went to work in the aerospace field for a NASA contractor in Houston, Texas and there also began taking violin lessons.
His interest in violins continued as he became acquainted with violin makers and restorers in the area. Gradually his interest became more centered on the mechanics of the instrument and he began an earnest study of the classical makers. Ultimately, in 1998, he decided to pursue his interest in the violin full time and enrolled in the violin making school in Cremona, Italy. He studied there for two years and then returned to the United States. For family reasons he then went to work as a software engineer while continuing to make instruments at home.
Finally, in 2006, he had the opportunity to return to luthiery and was thrilled to be given the opportunity to work at Carl Becker and Son. Michael does repair work on instruments as well as maintenance of bows. He is especially excited to partake in the Becker violin making tradition, which happens during the summers. |
