Owner & Director of Operations; Lead Luthier
Paul is the lead luthier and owner of Carl Becker and Son. He is currently leading a new production series of affordable instruments with the same sound and quality of classic Becker instruments. He is an expert in the making, repair, and restoration of stringed instruments (violins, violas, and cellos), and specializes in tonal adjustments that help instruments of all price ranges sound their best. Paul began his violin making career in 1971 at the age of 14 by his father, Carl F. Becker and grandfather, Carl G. Becker.
Director of Administration & Accounting
Lynda is the administrative and accounting director at Carl Becker and Son. For nearly 15 years, Lynda has managed all aspects of the business and administrative offices at CB&S, including business accounting, customer service, invoicing, inventory, appraisals, and certificates. Lynda also coordinates the teams at both Chicago locations, and ensuring that business operations run smoothly.
Repair Shop Manager
Jeremy began playing the violin as a child and went to major in violin performance in the Conservatory of Music at Wheaton College. However, he soon left to pursue his true calling at the Chicago School of Violin Making and graduated from there in 2004. Jeremy has gained experience working in several Chicago area shops for the past ten years before he joined Carl Becker and Son in January of 2014.
Thomas Moyer started working with us 2012. Tom works in the shop with Paul, helping him set up the foundation for new Paul Becker Shop instruments. Tom has been interested in strings and music for decades, and has played the guitar since he was young. Always one to work with his hands, Tom has a keen ability to work both accurately and precisely on some of the finer details of violin construction.
Brian Hoffman, MM
Brian Hoffman joined Carl Becker and Son in 2008 as a sales associate. Brian possess a keen knowledge of fine instruments, an insightful musical ear, and he is passionate about matching clients with their ideal instruments and bows. A talented cellist and graduate of Northwestern University and Oberlin Conservatory, Brian also enjoys an active career as a soloist, chamber musician, and educator.
Merrick joined Carl Becker and Son in 2012. He began studying the cello at age four in his native Minnesota, playing in the Greater Twin Cities’ Youth Symphonies throughout high school. He attended Arizona State University as a Regents Scholar, serving as principal cello of the Symphony Orchestra and Lyric Opera Theater, as well as Assistant Principal of the Chamber Orchestra. His many years of performing include studies at the Aspen Music Festival, as well as performances with the Sarasota Orchestra, Breckenridge Music Festival, Arizona Opera, and the Phoenix Symphony. His primary teachers include Richard Bock, Taki Atsumi and Tanya Remenikova. He continues to perform regularly in the Chicago area.
Vada is Paul and Lynda's youngest daughter, and she joined the family business in 2009. She is currently being trained by Paul Becker to make Becker violins and carry on the family tradition. She is learning all aspects of the business, including administrative duties.
ECHO RIVERA, PHD
Director of Communications
Echo is Paul and Lynda's oldest daughter, and is helping Carl Becker & Son take the digital and social media world by storm. She specializes in applying evidence-based information and graphic design strategies to a variety of fields--from social sciences research and evaluation to stringed instruments.
